Muchelney Abbey
A Benedictine Abbey founded about AD950 is
situated in beautiful grounds in the village of
Muchelney.
The excavated ground plan of the abbey church, preserved remains of the
15th Century south cloister and abbot's lodgings are to be seen.The
Saxon Abbey was raided several times by Vikings but the foundation
survived and flourished therough the Norman and Medieval periods until
its dissolution in AD1532. During the 16th Century its great abbey
church was systematically destroyed and sold for building stone but the
abbot's lodgings and the barns survive.
