Maunsel Canal Centre

Mid-way along the beautiful Bridgwater & Taunton Canal (the centre of the canal), canal enthusiasts Sylvia and Tony Rymell operate Maunsel Canal Centre situated at Maunsel Lock. From the only remaining Lock Cottage refreshments are offered to those visiting Maunsel Tea Garden. Although this is not a canal museum as such, both Sylvia and Tony, together with boaters and other canal enthusiasts who regularly visit, will be pleased to pass on any historical facts conceming the Canal

 

From this central point along the canal which is 14  miles long, visitors can walk or cycle along the towpath towards Bridgwater or Taunton. At Higher Mansel Lock a mere 500 yards away, visitors will find the sun which is the centre of the Somerset Space Walk – a scale version of the solar system.

 

We look forward to welcoming visitors from previous years and those visiting for the first time. Follow the brown & white directional signs leading to the Canal Centre and nearby car park.

 

 

 

Maunsel Lock is a good starting or half-way point for easy walks or cycling trips along the well maintained towpath, through the countryside on the edge of the Somerset Levels.

Cyclists who regularly use the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal towpath may obtain a free British Waterways cycle permit from Maunsel Canal Centre.  

Canoeists and owners of small boats may obtain a British Waterways licence from Maunsel Canal Centre. Canoeists who are members of the British Canoe Union will already be covered.

 

Maunsel is also near the centre of the Solar System Scale Model along the towpath. An explanatory leaflet is available from the Canal Centre.

Whether you arrive by boat, bike, car or on foot, you are welcome to rest a while and enjoy the Maunsel scene – the lock, bridge, cottage and gardens.
